    Question

    I was just wondering.

Is the any computer software that you can use to make proper movie soundtracks. Maybe along the lines of those dance/hip-hop E-Jay things but not cheesy

There are different versions of Dance E-Jay, some of them might be less cheesy (I think there is a "rock" version, for instance). There is also a music-making package for the Playstation which I know some people have used to make music for their films.

But really, any of these "instant music" packages will be cheesy to some extent. Why not get a real musician involved? This forum us full of musicians offering to score people's films. I can score your film for you if you like! E-mail me and we can discuss it.

Michael Wise, what classical instruments do you have to create classical songs with? Me and my friends are planning on beggining a film this Summer, and i wanted the soundtrack to be semi-classical. I'll take down your address/phone/name, maybe in the future you could do some songs for my film.

Don't bother with any e-jay rubbish because it just encourages you to write music that sounds very mediocre. These programs are designed to make you think you have talent even if you are deaf. Please don't think I am having a go at you because you could be a briliant musician. I have used these programs and find it very hard to do anything constructive. Cakewalk is a good bet but you have to be able to play an intrument or have some musical understanding. Using simple synthesiser sounds can be very effective as long as you select subtle ones and a reletively simple orchestral arrangement.
Find a friend who has a piano, keyboard and cakewalk or similar program and play around with simple ideas rather than trying to arrange for a full classical score.
As for the hip hop thing, make sure you don't write a track and then just lay it over a section of your film. Vangelis (bladerunner/chariots of fire) writes and performs his work in sync with the actual cuts in the film. Again, what he does is relatively simple in terms of theory but is absolutley perfect for the films.
If you want to see some really special music in relation to editing, then check out chris cunninghams latest film, as shown in the Apocolypse exhibition here in london. The music is synced with the editing which is VERY fast and furious and was produced by Roni Size (I think), or someone from the drum and bass genre.
If you want to see how poorly a track can be laid over a sequence then check out The World is Not Enough during the boat chase at the beggining where a modern drum track is used with a string section. Due to the dance orientated sounds it follows the action in no particular way and the dynamics are very poor due to the fact that the strings are the only section played in real time. I found the pace was slowed down because of this.
